Spring Allergies 101
Spring is here, and while it brings longer days and plenty of sunshine, it also comes with a few not-so-fun extras for our pets. Yep, we’re talking about allergies. If your dog or cat is suddenly scratching more than usual, rubbing their eyes, or just looking a bit uncomfortable, springtime triggers could be to blame. Let’s run through some of the usual suspects.
Pollen
Pollen is probably the biggest troublemaker. As flowers start showing off, the air fills with pollen that can leave pets with itchy eyes, sneezing fits, or irritated skin.
Grass Seeds
Then there are grass seeds, tiny but mighty little things that can stick to fur or even dig into the skin, causing infections if left unchecked.
Dust mites
Dust mites and mould spores also love the warmer weather and higher humidity, which can make respiratory issues and itchy skin worse.
Insects
Add in insects like ants, mozzies, and midges, plus the dreaded flea saliva that causes flea allergy dermatitis, and you’ve got a full list of irritants to keep an eye on. Even weeds and strong fragrances from cleaning products or sprays can set sensitive pets off.
So, what can actually help? Nutrition plays a huge role.
Feeding a raw diet gives pets a stronger foundation to deal with all the springtime drama. Natural proteins like chicken, beef, and turkey are full of amino acids that help repair skin and support the body’s defences. Offal and raw fats deliver essential nutrients and fatty acids that calm inflammation, soothe itchy skin, and help coats stay shiny and healthy.
Because raw meals are unprocessed, they’re also easier on digestion, which is closely linked to immunity. A happy gut means a stronger immune system and fewer sensitivities overall. And by skipping all the additives, colours, and preservatives often found in dry food, raw feeding avoids extra irritants that could make allergy symptoms worse.
Allergies might be part of the season, but they don’t have to take the fun out of it. With the right nutrition, pets can handle those spring triggers with a lot more ease.
